I attended the G-day game over the weekend and was disappointed. Even though it is a spring scrimmage I was still expecting a little more excitement. ESPN was in town to cover the game and 40,000+ fans showed up to watch. A national television audience had a chance to see what the UGA football team was capable of doing, but unfortunately was let down by the inabilities of the offenses. Some people may attribute it to the defense, which should get some credit, but the dropped passes sure helped them out.The game started out with a bang when Joe Cox completed a flee flicker pass to star wideout AJ Green. After that play, the game just fizzled out until the last play of the game when Redshirt Freshman Carlton Thomas ripped a 20 yard run for a touchdown, which ended up being the only of the day.
Even though the game lacked excitement it does not mean that our team will not be ready for the season. It's hard to tell from a single spring scrimmage how well a team will perform the following fall. Spring practice overall has showed us that we should not be too worried about some positions, such as QB and the O-Line. There are still concerns about the Defense, specifically the Defensive Ends, but the G-day game showed that there might be some hope with Justin Houston who had three sacks on the day.
Another big question is who will fill the RB position on the team. I personally believe there will be running back by committee. No one has stood out as the definitive number one guy, but who expected that? It'll be interesting to see what happens when the Richard Samuel comes back from injury and Washaun Ealey enrolls, the competition can only help these players get better. Right now, I like Carlton Thomas the most just because of his elusiveness. He is a small shifty back that can break some big runs. Richard Samuel can be more of a downhill runner that can pick up some tough yards. Samuel needs some good blocking and will excel greatly.
I guess we just have to wait and see what happens. The wait for the football season always seems too long. I leave you with a video clip of highlights from the the G-Day game:
